The culture war is over, according to the “official” interpreters of a new poll, conducted by Public Religion Research. The poll shows that “ideological,” sexual reactionary religion is on the way out. Our nation’s youth just do not support the old Christian, sexual politics of their parents. After all, 60% of Catholics between the ages of 18-34 favor legalized abortion!

As far as the official interpreters are concerned, this poll portends glorious new tidings for humanity. There is going to be no more ideological divisiveness in our culture. The culture war will fade from memory. Here’s the money quotation from the lead analyst of the poll, Dr. Robert Jones:

“Younger Americans, including younger Americans of faith, are not the culture war generation…[they are]bridging the divides that entrenched their elders and ushering in an era of consensus in which the common good trumps the clash of ideologies.”

Wow. This simpleton eugenicist views the indifference and ignorance of our society’s barbaric young adults as a sign that they are a conciliatory generation, bridging the gulf created by their ideological parents for the sake of the common good.

Of course, what he calls their ”bridging the divides that entrenched their elders” is, in reality, simply the exit from history of religion from the social order. Jones sees this as history moving toward the common good, as the riddance from his life of those with an “obsessive” and therefore irrational concern for abortion, gay marriage, embryonic stem cell research, and euthanasia.  

So, if this poll is correct, we are becoming even more a society that is inclinationally predisposed to the sorts of eugenicist attitudes that enabled the rise of the Soviet horror in Russia, the Nazi horror in Germany, and the demographic disappearance from history of western Europe. God bless those beautiful, young, sex-loving, freedom-affirming 18-34 year olds! They are uniters, not dividers.
