Yesterday I received an email with a “grassroots video” produced by Catholicvote.com.
The video and website, Catholicvote.com were produced by Fidelis. They have very strong ties to the Republican Party and to the McCain campaign. In February of this year they issued a press release endorsing John McCain for president and their website includes articles from Deal Hudson who is an advisor to the McCain campaign as a member of the “Catholic Outreach Committee”. They have given campaign contributions only to republicans and even supported republican Senator Rick Santorum over Bob Casey, a pro-life Catholic democrat, during the 2006 election cycle.
If you forward this video or link to the website in your official capacity you may be in violation of IRS regulations and Church policy. You will also be distributing materials that contradict Church teaching.
Among other things, the video glorifies US economic and military power. This runs contrary to Catholic Social Teaching which emphasizes a preferential option for the poor and solidarity. It also runs contrary to the Cathecism which teaches us that “Respect for and development of human life require peace.”
There is more than one intrinsic evil at issue this year. They include genocide, racism, torture, targeting non-combatants and engaging in unjust wars. They are all life issues and they all require our attention as Catholics.
Whether we vote Republican or Democrat this year what defines us is that we are Catholic.
Don’t let the political parties redefine what it means to be CATHOLIC.
Vote the Common Good!

Kathy,
I am not sure I understand your claims of genocide, racism, torture…etc. and its relevance to the US election. There is no party running that advocates or has been involved in such things with the possible exception of the sin of torture which John McCain explicitly rejected long before he ever entered the race. Only the most rabid partisan could spin the Iraq war into an intrinsic moral evil. There is certainly prudential judgment aplenty in determining whether the war should have been started. However, once it was, you have heard nothing but admonitions from the Church hierarchy that the US has an obligation to Iraq to bring it to conditions that will allow it to reassert sovereignty in a peaceful transition with a reasonable chance of success.
It is true that both candidates present morally problematic positions. McCain believes in embryonic stem cell research and that abortion should be allowed in cases of rape and incest. Thus, faithful Catholics are in a moral dilemma. Thus the principle of double effect comes into play. One has to look at which candidate provides the least moral damage to be done. So far, McCain has a 100% prolife voting record in the Senate. Obama has promised his first priority is to sign into law the “Freedom of Choice Act” which will eliminate every state restriction on abortion, include parental consent. He will immediately overturn every executive decision which funds domestic and overseas abortions. An Obama presidency means untold numbers more babies will die who would not otherwise die. Thus, the faithful Catholic is compelled by a well formed conscience to vote for McCain and so avoid material participation in intrinsic evil.
Finally, I think that you have a very confused notion of Church teaching. I have viewed this video and it has nothing in it that contradicts Church teaching. Your interpretation of this video in relation to Church teaching is so distorted as to raise the question of your genuineness. You also seem to have a confused notion of IRS regulations in the context of this blog or of my capacity in representing the Church.
Bob Casey is prolife in name only. Last year he voted to overturn the Mexico City policy which disallows US funding of overseas abortion providers, he is campaigning for the proabortion candidate Barak Obama, in fact, NARAL give him a 65% positive record in voting their agenda.
The Republicans provide nothing near the ideal. In fact, often there is no clear difference between the two in terms of intrinsic moral evil. However, it is becoming more and more rare that one can even legitimately entertain any Democrat candidate.
Do not fear, I will not let any political party redefine what it means to be Catholic. However, neither will I let you.
