It was taken from a series of articles called The Fundamentals and it was a response to Liberal Protestant theology which had begun to undermine Protestant faith. The tracts which came from this movement emphasized what they thought was fundamental to Christianity. Fundamentalism did not at the time, though popularly it is more that way now, promote a literalist reading of Scripture, though literalist reading of Scripture is what has become to be the touchstone of defining Fundamentalism today. Fundamentalism has always been ostentatiously anti_Catholic. Thus, using the phrase fundamentalist Catholic is itself a contradiction in terms.
