Any true Christian that has read the Bible will know that Blessed Theresa felt nothing different than a lot of other notable believers did at one time or another, even Jesus Himself. I have at times questioned my faith and His design for me, very dark dispair. But like Mother Theresa, we truely know deep down that He is there as mad at Him as we are. He still loves us just like our biological parents have loved us through our lives, for better or worse. I am dissapointed that her private letters are being published, but maybe we all can learn that no matter how faithful we are there are times when we can get angry with our Creator and He understands and will give us the strenght we need to go on whether we realize it's from Him or not.

Alas, no credit for consistency. It is called inattention to certain details; something to which I plead guilty. If you look above at David K.'s comment you will see what I mean. As it is apparently a major concern for you, I will correct the spelling. Thanks for the correction, Correction.

The correct spelling of her name is TERESA. I don't know how people make this mistake, over and over and over. She was one of the most famous people in the world and still many people will spell her name wrong. WHY?? And you spelled her name wrong over and over in your post even though it is spelled correctly in the very article you are quoting (??). I don't get it.

It's only when you experience this gaping emptiness inside that you are really getting somewhere in your relationship with God! That emptiness is the real me, helpless and desperate for God's grace.

Great article! But I think there are some quotes missing after the line: "Here are examples that a CBS reporter gives for his claim in what he reads in that new book of Mother Theresa’s letters:"

"This is simply because love is misunderstood in our society. Only those who experience self giving love can understand how the dark night can be God’s gift to those who He loves most."

Amen!

Mother Teresa said her smile was like a mask--she had to force the smile--she continued to love--even when it was difficult for her. How many times do we force the smile and love others instead of focusing on our own pain and feelings? The act of faith--is a consious decision to act on faith--regardless of our feelings.

Blessed Mother Teresa pray for us--we love you and your example.

Such suffering for a saint may also be seen as a great blessing for the world. The merits of her suffering in faith are graces for the rest of us slobs every bit as much as her physical suffering, and perhaps even more so!

Agreed. It's the experience of the dark night. Consult the mystic saints and see.

To the media, it's just a story, just like they do for Bill Clinton, Martha Stewart, or any other figure. Look to pull the celeb down a few notches. Not to worry: they will celebrate the comeback, too.

The first I though of when I saw the media coverage of this was St. Therese, just as you did.

"although I had not the consolation of faith, I forced myself to act as if I had.I have made more acts of faith in the last year than in the whole of my life."

It takes great faith to persist despite having no consolations and feeling totally separated from God and empty. To describe Blessed Teresa as having lost her faith is to totally misunderstand faith.
