Hanseatic, I’ve always been of the opinion that it is good to minimize the damages, just like you.

That’s why I think an Archbishop should shoot only ONE rebellious priest–within a week or two of arriving in the see–and then leave the body out there for a few days before commencing the usual funeral prep., etc., etc.

In 99% of the cases, the message is received immediately, and, you know, the Archbishop’s letters and instructions are heeded. No other disciplinary actions are required. Peace returns to the kingdom.

We must always remember that these men (men like Bishop John Nienstedt) must be pastors - true fathers-in-God - to a whole diocese, and not just to traditionalists. I have come across too many good, traditional Catholics who expect revolutionary change when ‘their own’ people get into positions of authority. Yet when we do this, I think we hurt our own cause. First, because (if we want to use the metaphor of a military operation) we hurt these people’s ability to carry out their tasks by exposing them to public scrutiny. Second, because we are supposed to operate in charity ourselves, and tend to set it aside when faced with the opporunity to take the upper hand.

What we really need to do is just pray for Bishop John Nienstedt and pray for St Paul & Minneapolis.
