Ran across (yesterday) a blog entry which stated that Rome often uses the term “relativism” as a substitute for Positive Law.

And, dadbagit, I can’t find the reference again today.

RJP - I meant to ask that question myself. Many commentators see Scotus as developing Bonaventure’s ontological priority of love into a proto-voluntarism but B16’s Regensburg lecture does seem to hint that he believes that Scotus’s development was more influenced by Hazm. It would make perfect sense that it came via the Islamic Aristotelian commentators but I am not sufficiently familiar with their writings or Scotus’s familiarity with them to opine. Let me know if you come up with anything.

Any evidence voluntarism can be traced back to Hazm (mentioned in the Regensburg lecture) then to Avicenna/Averroes and then Scotus?

You’re right. My bad. Since 1997 the US Army at Ft. Hood has allowed Wiccans to meet and hold Wiccan “services,” approved their high priestess, and assigned them an Army chaplain, though not a Wiccan Chaplain per se. Since 1990 the USAF chaplains’ manual has provided information on accommodating Wiccan practices and at several locations including Lackland AFB, TX have sponsored Wiccan meetings and allowed Wiccan “ministers” to use base chapels for weddings. The US Army has in addition, identified the Church of Satan as a “faith” system eligible for recognition.

All of this supports my point but still, there are as of yet, no active duty chaplains.
