That’s My King
There is something about the poetic expression together with the pleasing tonal qualities of some African American Baptist preachers that I find to be particularly faith affirming. The late Dr. Shadrach Meshach (S.M.) Lockridge, a Texas born Baptist preacher, is one such example. Here is a YouTube tribute to Dr. Lockridge and his waxing eloquent about Our King, that illustrates what I am talking about:
As another Baptist preacher once said: “now if that don’t light your fire, then your wood must be wet.”

I am moved to tears…wish a little of that kind of passion was offered to Catholics at mass on sundays! It might remind us of the TRUE PRESENCE that’s with us at mass.

Marvelous! Utterly marvelous! I echo Kris’ comments. A few sermons like this, yes sermons, not homilies, but sermons and we could again pack our churches. Instead, I fear we’ll wind up with more homilies about global warming/cooling/shrinking/growing. Or rummaging through a university catalogue and reading the course listings for an MSW.

My old Episcopal rector used to say that a homily is another name for a sermon which wasn’t well-prepared.

He says, “You can’t get Him off of your mind”, I cannot get these beautiful words off of my mind! The whole thing reminds me a little bit of a little prayer book EWTN used to sell, the Titles of Christ. But this is very much more original . . . only a true lover of Christ and master of words would come up with some of these; “The most amazing phenomenon to cross over the horizon of this world”, “entirely sincere”,”immortally graceful”, and “impartially merciful”. Good stuff!
My 6 year old boy loved it too, and that’s saying something!

Wow! I just don’t hear this often enough and like John said a few of these types of sermons, we would pack them in. My soul so longs for this and I don’t get to hear it often enough. Wow utterly amazing. Like a fresh drink of cold water, I needed that.
