“The idea that anti-Catholicism is a significant force in American life today is a complete canard, perpetrated by theologically and politically right-wing Roman Catholics”

gives his take on an anti-Catholic author, named Susan Jacoby, who wrote an anti-Catholic Washington post article on Anti-Catholicism: A Phony Issue, where many of her statements lack any type of argument or reason but are based emotion, disdain and malice.  I wonder if her last name has anything to do with it?

  1. Oh yeah! I guess we’re supposed to ignore “the man behind the curtain”! Methinks the woman protests too much!

  2. For Anti-Catholics, their antipathy for the Church and her teachings is so deep, that the contempt is confused for common sense. It is an orthodoxy all its own, a personal magisterium, against which all else is measured and found wanting. To such as these, it is not “Anti-Catholicism”, it is “rational” thought.

  3. Good points. It must drive them nuts how something seen as so outdated and nonsensical as the Catholic church maintains such a position of authority.

Her article was garbage. So also is your question. Why the anti-Semitic ad hominem?

  5. Gordon,

Obviously you have misunderstood my reference (this was my edit to Shelray’s original post–sorry Shelray). It was intended as a loose reference to the anti-Catholic Jacobin party who, under Robspierre, was responsible for the reign of terror against all things Catholic during the French Revolution.

I have to plead ignorance; I was not aware that her surname was of Jewish origin so I was not sensitive to anti-Semitism as a possible inference of my reference. Actually, having read her article I would have guessed that the name would have come from German Catholic stock.
