Sex Embryonic-Fetal and Post-Natal Animal-Human (Chimera) Mixtures

THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF AN ART SCULPTURE – IT IS NOT REAL

Scientists are combining real animal and human embryonic material together to create a hybrid called “chimeras” which are to be used in scientific research. The U.K. has not yet banned it’s practice, and some see chimeras as a solution in adressing the shortage of human sex embryos available for medical research. Some scientists, which have no ethical reservations in practicing with what they feel is an effective substitute for their work on stem cells that could potentially offer new treatments for diseases. The use and creation of chimeras is currently illegal in France and Germany. Thanks to Lifesite for the link to, A monster Created in Man’s ImageDebating the Ethics of Chimeras.

  3. I’m with Dan on this one. No chimeras have been created that look like the picture there, some have been created that have small morphological changes, but nothing that drastic. The picture reminds me of the “Ripley clones” in the 4th Alien movie.

    Comment by Bill — August 11, 2006 @ 11:11 AM

  4. I don\’t think that Shelray was trying to imply with his graphic that this particular chimera had been created. Rather, it was using the sculpture by Patricia Piccinini to illustrate the dangers of science without ethics. Here is a description of the graphic.

    Comment by David — August 11, 2006 @ 11:38 AM

  5. Ah. Didn’t see a link to that (or explanation) in the original post. The situation depicted there is still mere fantasy, thankfully.

  6. If that photograph is real it scares me to think of how far these scientists will go to perform something for no aparaent reason. What will putting a human and an animal together cause but chaos and torture. Why would they even want to put something or techinically someone (since it is mixed with human) through such tortures. What can they do to it when they’re done experimenting on it but terminate it’s life. If it does lead to such measures they should all be incarcerated for their rediculous and fruitless theories.

    Comment by Natifah — December 7, 2006 @ 1:35 PM

  7. Natifah,

The photograph is actually a sculpture . The alleged motivation behind combining human and animal DNA is to accelerate embryonic stem cell research and have an endless supply of cells in order to perform their own diabolical research.

  9. I seriously thought this was an actually Chimera. Thank goodness I saw the link before I started jumping into conclusions. I can help but to feel that the idea of combining two species’ embroyo is disatrously wrong.

I may be just thirteen, but I’m sure people younger than I am can tell that this idea is a mistake. A cool experiment, but a mistake. The so-called “experts and scientists” may be trying to improve our lives, but at what cost? An obvious mutation and probably a death of a couple thousanad embroyos. They should just leave everything alone.

  14. Lets get real guys. Looking at this from a purely logistical viewpoint, it would be much simpler and less labor and money intensive to use a primate for an experiment like this. Ignoring all the talk about right and wrong, the barriers that keep humans and dogs from making “Pups” would make it a huge challenge for a lab to mix these species. If anyone wanted to cross that line, it would probably be with a species closer to our own. The risius monkey, at least shares a protien with some humans. That protien is indicated by the + or – in your blood type. If you were to attempt a cross species mix, I’d start with somthing with wich we share a few biochemical traits.

    Comment by John — April 25, 2007 @ 10:13 AM

  15. John,
the picture should be considered a type of imagery hyperbole to reflect how strongly we are opposed to the mixing of human and animals cells. I apologize if it was misleading.

O and by the way this picture is ugly anyways!

So what was the reason they want to do these testings anyway!

To make ugly creatures that were not even meant to be!

God people in this world are so freakin picky!! judging every time some one [expletive deleted] blinks. I personally believe its an interesting concept. And if they really did do animal/human joining, maybe humans would smarten up and treat creatures with better dignity then they do now!

There aint no god. if there was he probably left because it was his creation that ruined his whole idea of a perfect civilation.

  20. Amanda -

With your beginning statement it would seem that intellectual debate is not what you have in mind.

There are many strains of vague thinking manifested in your short response (e.g. an apparently confused use of the term “judging”) but rather than point them all out perhaps selecting just one would do.

Since you seem to be dogmatically confident in your world view, perhaps you might demonstrate how you are able to support the (grammatically incorrect) negative universal assertion that “There aint no [G]od.” Negative universals are generally impossible to support. This is especially true when it comes to the claims of militant atheists as the pseudo-intellectual flailings of such dogmatists as Dawkins, Dennet, and Hitchens ably demonstrate. I am interested to hear if you might have some more rationally supportable arguments.

    Comment by David — June 1, 2007 @ 7:57 AM

  21. Does Patricia Piccanini know that you are using a photograph of her sculpture in your blog? Have you asked for permission? Paid her a royalty. I thought stealing was against the commandments … but like most of the self-righteous you seem to pick and choose only what you lile. Stealing other people’s artwork is stealing. Period.

    Comment by Sick of the self-righteous — October 25, 2007 @ 2:37 PM

  22. Sick – it is so often that we find our own faults in others isn’t it. By the way, the photographer rather than the sculptor would generally be the one who would be the permission. As I understand it, the question of fair use for non-revenue gaining, educationally focused enterprises is at play here. We used to link to the actual source of the photo as a means of providing the attribution but that was in a sense stealing bandwidth. We are not presenting any photos as our own work and we are not gaining anything monetarily for them so given the opportunities involved in fair use, we believe that we are not depriving anyone of their intellectual property.

But then, I suppose that self-righteousness can blind the best of us to the possibility of alternative explanations…

    Comment by David — October 25, 2007 @ 5:22 PM

  23. Good gracious, you people are so stupid!!! This is an ARTWORK. It is not possible to do it in reality!!!!!!!! There are LAWS forbidding anything like this. How can so many people be SO STUPID. You should REALLY reconsider who you are and what is the difference between you and the ‘thing’ in the picture, because obviously it’s not in intelligence…

    Comment by Veronika — December 4, 2007 @ 2:46 PM

  24. Veronika -

The article was not about the picture. The picture was simply an artistic illustration. By the way, there are no international laws and local national laws against man-animal cloning, are threatened at best.

Whether something like this is even possible, who knows…it certainly is not in the immediate future. However, this illustration is simply used to show that regardless of whether something like this could be developed, experimenting with human-animal chimeras even at the cellular level is abominable.

Finally, I should say a word about your approach to discourse. It is severely lacking. First of all, I am not sure if stupidity is manifested by the inability to read but if so, you may be saying more than you wish. Also, I will warn you that next time we will not edit your comments to remove offensive language so unless you enjoy spending time writing comments that no one will ever see, then I would suggest learning to employ a bit more sophistication in your prose.

    Comment by ariel stein — December 6, 2007 @ 10:34 AM

  29. Ariel and Karleigh -

Please read a little more closely and Ariel watch the language that you use. This is a picture of an artist’s depiction of a chimera. There is no possibility right now of something like this being created. It was used as a graphic illustration of what is actually being done when scientists combine animal and human DNA, even if the resulting being is not allowed to fully mature.

You will also see that we are not advocating that this be done; rather we are warning against it. In other words, we agree with your sentiments.

Finally, I would recommend that proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation are not optional in written communication. When trying to communicate ideas and enter into dialogue and your intention is to convince those with whom you disagree, appealing to the way it makes you feel, threatening to disfigure others into something hideous, etc. are not effective methods for anything more than starting a heated argument.

Those who would do these types of things will immediately dismiss you. When you say that you know what you are talking about, they will take you more seriously if you do some research in order to express yourself in their language, provide a reasoned argument (with restrained emotions, though it need not be completely unemotional), in grammatically correct writing, devoid of vulgar language.

I commend you both at 16 years of age, for caring enough to take the time to respond. Perhaps in the future, you can practice with methods that would be more effective in promoting your point of view.

    Comment by Larry — January 9, 2008 @ 10:33 AM

  32. I do not believe this is right, but it is in fact, a sculpture. A sculpture of an artist’s take on a chimera, a mythylogical beast. Regardless of the moral obligations and ethical codes, you should look at it for what it is. A perception. Perception is NOT reality and everyone has their own. Ariel, I believe you are absolutley correct. But can I ask you this, do you believe abortion is wrong? If we are to spare all ‘disfigured’ creatures from life in a creul world, what would you say to all mothers who have born into this world, a child with Down Syndrome. Many believe they are disfigured, many choose to torment them, and yet you most likely would not advocate aborting this child’s life based on the sole fact of a hard road ahead, would you?
As far as these people being heartless and creul, that is slightly rediculous from my point of view. It is purely my opinion that if someone is attempting to be logical and actually have coherent thoughts voiced properly, it is a brilliant idea to shove emotion to the side and think on a purley intellectual basis.

    Comment by Jin — March 22, 2008 @ 12:54 PM

  37. Goodness gracious me. There is a lot of overreacting going on over here… and the majority of the overreaction is caused by people forgetting to take into account that the creature in this photo is not a real chimera. It is simply an artistic illustration of what could happen if science progresses without ethics.

In reality, chimeras are created so that they can be used as organ donors; they are not made on a mere whim, no experimentation just for the sake of experimentation. In real life, cellular changes in chimeras are minimal, and the animal itself doesn’t even know the difference between itself and a “normal” animal. I could go into the ethics of using animals as human organ donors, but I think that that would just get me off topic, so I’ll suppose I’ll just leave you to ponder.

    Comment by Dylan — April 4, 2008 @ 2:49 AM

  38. Oh, and Keke:

First of all, this is not a real chimera, as I have already stated. But in addition, do you have anything to back you up when you say that “all the scientists [are] trying do is get rich”? Science is a field that people enter when they want to help improve and increase understanding of the world, as well as ameliorate the quality of life on earth. Even if this was a real chimera, there would no doubt be a practical explanation for its creation. Scientists want to do good, not bad.

    Comment by Dylan — April 4, 2008 @ 3:00 AM

  39. Perspective from a scientist in a molecular lab. Things are never black and white, the technology to create chimeras is like any other technology, devoid of inherent good or evil, it’s what we do with it that matters. For example, all insulin used to treat diabetes nowadays is a product of a chimera (the human insulin gene inserted into a bacteria for reproduction). Pig used to be used, but some a small percentage of people had reactions to the pig insulin. (pig insulin is identical to most human insulin, but not all).

  40. Karleigh and Justin,

The comments are open for dialog, debate, and discussion. Ranting and emoting would be best taken elsewhere.

Justin – you had elements of a reasonable argument buried in one of your rants. If you would like to engage in a discussion about the problem of the existence of God in the midst of suffering and evil that would be fine. However, it will have to take place in a mature manner.

One thing I will note in reference to this, one does not prove God’s no- existence by pointing to a world which is not in accord with they way one would like to see it. One simply has demonstrated that one’s limited conception of God is incorrect.

I once read a fantasy book(years ago) about a version of Earth that was “Super Science”. I think the book was called “Phase” by Pierse Anthony. Anyway this world did exactly what that picture shows only the bodies were more human with the heads of animals. In the book these creatures were all SLAVES miserable and abused.
I understand the need to study heart disease,as it runs in my family but I dont think that is the right direction. I am sure it has to be against Gods law also.
Hats of to the artist though .. they obviously did a “GREAT” job. I had to jump on the net to check out this story as soon as I seen it. Sorry, but I have to laugh at everybody that thought it was real. But I am glad to see that some people have enough morals to be outraged. GOD HELP US ALL.

Are those people watching that chimera? I thought that once again, science has found a way to torment more and more “experiments”. Seeing that it’s a statue, I say that it is right for it to be banned.

Now, I agree with the rat and ear chimera, because it wasn’t manipulated, and it actually DID help people. I say that all though there are many things that can be questioned on whether or not it’s helpful(animal testing, DNA studies, etc.) I say that without a doubt, such a tissue manipulation is unneeded. I partly agree with Elaine. Help people… but at what cost? After you’ve made the chimera, it’s alive. Just like us.

I think some individuals should educate themselves further on the subject if the image depicted above was indeed more aestectically pleasing while still remaining a chimera I’m sure others would feel differently I do not condone inter-species erotica however different scenarios will yield different results I also do not agree with the harvesting of eggs for the sole purpose of termination for the use of stem cell research I don’t know too much about the way of acquiring said cells but I am not against stem cell reseach as long as it’s not exploited it’s a little like playing God but that just means were evolving we might cure cancer blindness repair nerves etc.
