Single-Sex Classroom Producing Good Results but Ignoring Gender Equity!!!

Filed under: Culture, Feminism — shelray @ 12:08 AM

The unusual alliance of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Tex., and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., “opened the door” for single-sex schools with an amendment to the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act. Single-sex public schools are controversial because they run counter to the feminist movement of the past four decades and because so little research has been done on whether they work, but common sense and the trend of successful programs suggest they do. Many people think single-sex schools were banned by Title IX sexual-discrimination laws, but the single sex schools were exempt by Congress in 2001. While the Education Department still is working on the regulations, there are some schools who have already moved ahead and implemented single-sex classrooms.

About 200 public schools offer gender-separated instruction – up from only four schools in 1998, with almost half the schools being in the Southern states. California closed it’s study on same sex schools. “The single-sex setting in some cases eliminated social distractions and allowed for better concentration on academics and open discussion about dating and pregnancy, but  these benefits were undermined because gender equity often was not addressed in the classrooms, gender stereotypes were often reinforced and in some cases stereotypical behaviors were worsened, according to the report”. Apparently, in California, the primary objective of schools is not academics but political correctness. Yikes!, separate but equal!!, and we wonder why our public education system is in shambles.

Some teachers who have transitioned over to the same sex educational model say they would never go back. One parent didn’t like her kid being used as a guinea pig, “I went in there thinking this was going to be a sexual-discrimination suit. But once I saw the test scores, I was proved wrong. The public education system stinks to high heaven!! The excuses has to stop and it’s time those in charge of spending money and making excuses have to be held accountable. Get the special interests politicians out of the educational system and  get someone who is serious about education. Â If those in charge of education ever get serious about teaching and decide to focus on the students and academics (vs. projection of their own morality standards and agendas), I think this model will prove to be a viable option for many poor performing schools.

  1. [...] I don’t believe this program is needed in all situations, but it has shown to be effective in areas where the school system has failed the children. It only makes sense that if there are less distractions and more student specific teaching methods, children will benefit from same-sex class rooms/schools. The agenda minded activists, such as Gandy, have nothing to back up there delusional desire for an androgynous society other than the denial of nature and the habitual tendency of burying their head in the dirt.
