At that particular moment they simply happen to be in a state of rather extreme denial. For many of us, especially those not terribly skilled in apologetics, prayer is the best way to help these people: prayer that they will open their hearts and listen to God speaking softly to them, prayer that they will be reconciled with the Church and build the Body of Christ on earth. Or maybe I'm just overly optimistic!
